Does anyone have a Voip Phone that actually works?

I’ve talked to people who were using VOIP and the sound quality would vary from normal (as good as a land line) to what I call “ham radio operator quality” during a given call. I also have a friend who got VOIP from his cable company and he lost connectivity enough that he ended up getting a cell phone as a back-up. Who out there has found a Voip Service that works as reliably and with sound quality as good as land line? Anybody?

I have a motorola voip modem that i got with my vonage service. i have moved many times since, and been on all types of internet connections. the technology works good, even with my ‘antique’ modem. the bottleneck is strictly the ISP. if you have an ISP that occassionally diliberately chokes off datarate to high volume users, like you will be with voip, then expect problems. cable company ISPs are famous for offering “fair use” service where your datarate drops to a crawl when your neighbors are on line. look carefully at your ISP agreement to see if they can guarantee the level of continuous service needed. I currently have Comcast cable with guaranteed datarate with excellent voip. Previously i had Qwest (telephone) DSL service and that too was excellent. voip service like vonage is much cheaper than traditional phone, and i can keep my phone number no matter where i go.
